Separate inventory control from removal
Begin with a stock count that distinguishes sellable merchandise, transfers, vendor returns, and material approved for disposal. Do not use the removal pile as an unofficial inventory adjustment. Record who authorized each category and isolate customer orders, held merchandise, and items involved in a return or ownership dispute.
For a planning example, a closing apparel shop might move boxed stock to another branch, return rented payment equipment, and request removal of worn standalone racks. Those are three different workflows. Complete the transfers and returns first so the hauling team receives an unmistakable list of ordinary nonhazardous material.
Check fixture ownership and attachment
Photograph each display, counter, shelving run, and stockroom cabinet before deciding its destination. Shopping-center agreements may reserve some fixtures for the landlord or next tenant. Ask whether a unit is freestanding, anchored, wired, plumbed, or connected to another assembly, and obtain clarification when the answer is not apparent.
Do not assume a furniture clearout includes removing connected lighting, security gates, fixed cabinetry, refrigerated equipment, or building finishes. Identify work requiring a qualified separate provider before requesting hauling. Empty and inspect approved cabinets; cash, keys, alarm components, customer data, and small electronics can remain hidden in drawers or service compartments.
Plan the customer and back-of-house route
Describe whether pickup occurs while the shop is trading, after public access ends, or following complete closure. Share center requirements for service corridors, loading docks, security check-in, elevator reservations, and waste staging. A route through a public mall may have different permissions from a rear service entrance.
Keep merchandise movement and removal traffic distinguishable, with labels visible from the carrying side. Protect required exits and avoid accumulating furniture in shared hallways. Discuss item dimensions, access limitations, and potential disassembly during scoping. Any after-hours access or special handling must be confirmed for the actual address and proposed visit.
Agree on acceptance before the final load
Provide an itemized inventory, photographs, desired timing, and the store’s authorized contact. The estimate discussion should account for volume, weight, access, and labor, with final onsite approval before loading. Set a rule for newly discovered stockroom contents so the closing team cannot accidentally expand the approved work without a price discussion.
At completion, compare each area with the list and record retained fixtures or excluded material. PNW requests currently cover Portland–Vancouver through JunkPDX after an address and scope check. Seattle and Boise are not open. Ordinary hauling should never be presented as certified product destruction, inventory auditing, or fulfillment of the lease itself.
KEEP THIS WITH YOUR PROJECT NOTES
Before you take the next step
- Finish stock transfers and vendor returns before the approved removal visit.
- Obtain permission for each landlord-owned or disputed display fixture.
- Photograph attachment points and identify connected electrical or plumbing components.
- Confirm service corridor, dock, and security rules with center management.
- Name the person authorized to approve scope changes onsite.
Save a text checklist with space for the address, timing and approval contact. Downloading does not submit or book a pickup.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Details worth settling early
Can unsold merchandise go with the fixtures?
Only after ownership, suitability, and the specific material are reviewed and approved. Liquids, batteries, chemicals, regulated products, and sensitive documents need separate decisions rather than inclusion in a mixed pile.
Will hauling include taking down store signs?
Sign removal is a separate scope question. Elevated work, electrical connections, attachment methods, and landlord requirements may require another provider; disclose the sign before requesting an estimate.
What if another branch wants furniture at the last minute?
Remove that item from the hauling inventory and mark its destination clearly. Confirm the change with the onsite approver before loading; branch transfers are a separate transport arrangement unless explicitly agreed.
